1. The "Me-First" Gospel (Pride and Self-Worship)
A major sign of a false teacher is the shift of focus from Jesus Christ to the leader themselves. They often demand "pastor worship" and act as though they are the only ones with a "special" connection to God.
- The Red Flag: They talk more about their own greatness, their cars, and their "anointing" than they do about the Bible.
- The Bible Says: "For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting." (Romans 16:18)
2. The "Price-Tag" on Grace (Greed and Exploitation)
If every prayer, blessing, or "deliverance" requires a specific financial "seed," you are dealing with a merchant, not a minister. Fake pastors often view the congregation as a marketplace.
- The Red Flag: They use fear to demand money—for example, telling you that you will die or remain poor unless you pay for a "special prayer."
- The Bible Says: "In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories." (2 Peter 2:3)
3. A Fruitless Lifestyle (Character and Scandal)
Jesus taught that you would know them by their "fruit"—meaning their character and the way they live when the cameras are off.
- The Red Flag: A consistent history of broken promises, legal battles, sexual scandals, or high-level financial fraud (like the recent ₦1 billion lawsuit cases).
- The Bible Says: "Watch out for false prophets... by their fruit you will recognize them." (Matthew 7:15-16)
4. Fear and Manipulation (Spiritual Abuse)
False prophets thrive on control. They use "visions" or "prophecies" to scare people into submission or to isolate them from their families.
- The Red Flag: They tell you that you are "cursed" if you leave their church or that questioning them is "touching the Lord's anointed."
- The Bible Says: "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7)
5. Twisted Scripture (Deceptive Teaching)
They often take Bible verses out of context to justify their own bad behavior or to promise miracles that never happen.
- The Red Flag: They focus only on "feel-good" or "prosperity" messages and ignore the parts of the Bible that speak about repentance, holiness, and truth.
- The Bible Says: "For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead... they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear." (2 Timothy 4:3)
