Harrison Gwamnishu Scandal: Allegations of Ransom Theft and Legal Battle
Popular Delta State activist Harrison Gwamnishu, known for his work with the Behind Bars Rights Foundation, is facing serious accusations from the family of a kidnapped couple in Edo State. The case has sparked a nationwide debate regarding "celebrity activism" and the handling of crowdfunded rescue missions.
1. The Allegation: A "Missing" ₦5.4 Million
The crisis began following the kidnapping of Mr. and Mrs. Segiru in the Aviele community of Edo State on November 22, 2025. The family alleged that they entrusted Gwamnishu with ₦20 million in crowdfunded ransom to secure the couple's release. However, the family later accused Gwamnishu of diverting part of the funds for personal use.
2. Gwamnishu’s Defense
Gwamnishu has firmly denied the allegations of theft. In a series of public statements and social media posts, he explained:
- He claimed he was acting as a mediator to negotiate the release.
- He admitted to withholding ₦5.4 million from the initial payment but claimed it was a tactical decision intended to pressure the kidnappers, rather than an act of theft.
- He reportedly remitted the ₦5.4 million to the Auchi Area Police Command before the situation escalated further.
3. Arrest and Detention Reports
In early December 2025, reports emerged that Gwamnishu was being detained. Some news outlets and local sources reported that he was remanded to Oko Prison in Edo State, while others indicated a potential transfer to Abuja for further investigation into kidnapping and financial misconduct allegations. His vehicle was also reportedly impounded by the police in Auchi.
4. Impact on Activism
The scandal has caused a rift in the activist community. While some supporters believe Gwamnishu is being framed or targeted by those he previously exposed, others criticize his "unilateral decisions" in a life-and-death situation. As of late December, the husband, Mr. Segiru, reportedly remains in captivity, adding further emotional weight to the legal battle.
